HAENA, MY HAPPY PLACE

There are many places on Kauaʻi that take my breath away, but Haʻena holds a very special place
in my heart. This stretch of the North Shore—lush, mystical, and deeply storied—feels like a
world where the veil between past and present is almost transparent. As a photographer, I’m
endlessly inspired by its beauty. As a resident who has come to appreciate the heart of this island,
I’m moved by its cultural, historical, and spiritual significance.
Most people first think of Tunnels Beach (Makua) when they imagine Haʻena—and for good
reason. Its golden sand, iconic mountain backdrop, and peaceful turquoise water make it one of
my favorite locations for maternity and newborn photo shoots. There’s something magical that
happens when soft evening light drifts across the reef, when a mother-to-be stands framed by the
cliffs of Makana, or when a newborn is cradled in the arms of parents surrounded by shimmering
ocean. The energy there feels nurturing, protective, and full of life—perfect for celebrating
growing families.
But there is so much more to Haʻena than its photogenic shoreline.

Haʻena is one of the most culturally rich places on the island. In Hawaiian tradition, it is known
as a place of piko—a center, a point of connection. Just inland lies the ancient Hāʻena Heiau
complex, including Ke Ahu a Laka, a sacred hula platform. This is one of the most historically
significant places for hula in all of Hawaiʻi. It is believed to be the home of Laka, the goddess of
hula and forest growth, the spiritual source from which hula practitioners draw inspiration,
discipline, and devotion. Standing near this area, you can feel the presence of generations who
came to train, chant, dance, and honor the traditions that carry the heartbeat of Hawaiian culture.
Every time I’m in Haʻena, I feel this deeper pulse. The mountains seem to hold stories; the wind
carries chants that once echoed through the valleys. This is a place of learning, reflection, and
respect. I always remind myself—and my clients—that Haʻena is not only beautiful, but alive
with history and meaning.
Spiritually, Haʻena has a quiet power. The lush forests, the cool freshwater streams, the jagged
peaks, and the vast, open ocean all seem to work together in harmony. It’s a place that invites
you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect. Many of my clients tell me that being photographed
here feels different—more peaceful, more emotional, more grounded. I believe that’s because
Haʻena holds a balance of beauty and mana (spiritual energy) that is truly unique.
Working here has shaped me as an artist. It has taught me to move with intention, to honor the
land, and to look for the moments that feel genuine and alive. My camera may capture light, but
Haʻena gives that light meaning.
So when people ask me what my favorite place is on Kauaʻi, I don’t hesitate—it’s Haʻena. Not
only because it offers stunning backdrops for maternity and newborn photography, but because it
reminds me, every time I walk its beaches or stand beneath its cliffs, of all who stood here before
me that deserve to be remembered and honored.

If you ever find yourself here—whether for a photo session or simply to explore—I hope you
feel the same sense of awe, gratitude, and connection that Haʻena has given me. It is a gift, one
I’m grateful to photograph and to share.
