Maternity Photography Trends for 2025

Your pregnancy is a very special time. You want to do what you can to remember the unique hopes and dreams but also sometimes the challenges, because these things fade. When the baby arrives, your life changes radically, and it’s easy to lose track of all the visions and plans you had for your baby. Maternity photos are an ideal way to remember this fleeting, but significant time in your life.

If you’re considering a maternity photography session in the next few months, staying on top of the latest trends will help you get the most out of your photo shoot. Here’s what we can expect to be trending in 2025.

Destination Photography

Maternity photos on location can be much more memorable. Instead of just taking photos around your home or your neighborhood or in a local studio, you can take them someplace truly spectacular. This is why more and more mothers are choosing destination photoshoots.

One of the amazing things you can do with a destination photoshoot is combining it with a babymoon. In a babymoon, you and your partner get a chance to celebrate your relationship before the baby comes. You have a chance to enjoy one more child-free vacation before the needs and interests of your children take control of your vacations for the next decade or two. You can spend your vacation in comfort and relaxation.

However, a babymoon is also an ideal time to plan for the baby’s coming. It’s a perfect opportunity to make expectations clear: who is supposed to do what once the baby arrives. You can hash out how to deal with in-laws and other family. But most of all, you have a chance to talk about your plans, dreams, and visions of how life will be once the child arrives. That’s why it’s ideal to combine with your maternity photoshoot, because you can document those dreams and visions before the baby arrives, no matter what happens when they get here.

When choosing a destination maternity photoshoot, it’s a good idea to work with a local maternity photographer who knows the area and is prepared to take care of many of the details. The last thing you need is additional stress from having to corral a photographer who is unprepared. You want someone who can help create a stress-free and relaxing experience.

Yoga and Exercise Clothes

The standard uniform for maternity photos is long, flowing dresses. Translucent materials. Luxuriant textures. Boho styles that come off the shoulder and expose the baby bump. These have always been popular and will always remain popular because they look beautiful and turn mothers into goddesses. Not to mention the fact that they are comfortable and feel as luxurious as they look.

However, there is an emerging trend for mothers to try to look more down-to-earth. You’re not going to see very many maternity shoots in jeans or business suits. Instead, the alternative of choice is yoga and exercise clothes. In figure-hugging (even figure-shaping) exercise clothes, mothers can still look feminine and beautiful, while enjoying similar or even better comfort compared to the more traditional outfits. This helps women convey that they are active, dynamic personalities and not just figures to behold. For some women, that’s an important part of what they want to convey in their maternity photos.

Couples Taking Photos Together

Most maternity photo sessions in the past have been with the mother only. However, just as babymoons are getting more popular as ways for couples to improve and celebrate their relationship before the baby comes, more partners are getting involved with maternity photographs. This is a great way for parents to demonstrate their commitment to each other and to the baby.

In addition to the emotional power of having maternity photographs with both parents, having a partner in the maternity photographs gives more options for poses, and it helps support the mom during the session, both literally and figuratively.

Painting or Writing on the Belly

One of the funnier and more offbeat trends we’ve seen in recent years is the desire to paint or write something on the mother’s belly. This has become more popular in recent years as people have become comfortable with writing on the body, like tattoos or mehndi (henna tattoos). Of course, you can’t get a tattoo on the baby bump, but you can use a safe body paint or some temporary markers.

What do people put on their belly? It varies. Abstract images. Messages for friends and family. Artistic images that create a unique photograph. Often, it’s an elaborate joke or a setup for before-and-after images. Your imagination and your artistic ability are the only limits. Well, that and what the mother will put up with.
